Several countries in Latin America and the Caribbean are currently experiencing a severe sociopolitical crisis that is weakening our democracies and constitutes a clear setback for human rights. This is manifested – among other things – in the criminalisation and persecution of activists, the assassination of militants, the closure of spaces for citizen participation, the politicisation of the justice system, and increasing levels of violence.
Brazil under Bolsonaro is extremely unjust and violent. His government is anti-Indigenous, anti-environmentalist, anti-feminist, racist… All possibilities of working together with those in power have evaporated. They are intent on dismantling the benefits system and they have simply closed down the Ministry of Culture. There is no respect for human rights and they are cutting public education and health services to nothing. The NGO Thydêwá no longer receives any support from the federal government and is instead being harrassed and persecuted.
